Blog Response #9- The Hangover

I agree that the Hangover movies are so funny. Honestly, just looking at Zach Galifianakis makes me laugh. The first clip when he has the baby attached to him makes me laugh because it’s so incongruent. Anything he does will just make it funnier. I don’t think Ed Helms is very funny because I find him annoying. I didn’t like his character on the Office and I think my perception of him carried on to the Hangover as being an annoying employee who is a kiss up. Often it’s weird to see famous actors who are in popular TV shows in popular movies. I always naturally associate them with the TV show they are in. The other actors and scenes are still funny, so I enjoy them. I love how the movie is so blunt and incongruent. Even though Alan makes most of the mistakes, it doesn’t get old. This is true due to the incongruence in how he doesn’t repeat what he said. Most of what he says is so idiotic that the audience is not expecting it. Also, he says things that could be seen as inappropriate, but I feel like knowing the roles he plays it’s not out of character or weird because the audience is used to it. The most incongruent scene to me is in the third movie when Alan gets the giraffe. He just drives down the interstate with a giraffe attached to his fancy convertible. I like when the child in the car passing is looking at it as a child would look at a cute dog in a window. Everyone is so fascinated by it and watching it with big smiles. Alan approaches a low bridge and the giraffe doesn’t clear it and gets its head cut off. This is so incongruent because I was not expecting for the innocent giraffe to get decapitated. The unexpected happens in this movie whether it be good or bad.

  1. The giraffe scene is definitely a crazy one, but by the third movie, you kinda know that it's not going to work out for the giraffe as long as Alan is involved. At that point it is just Alan being Alan... or better yet any Galifianakis character being a Galifianakis character.

  2. It's interesting that Alan seems so crucial to the humor. Do you think that it would be funnier to you without Helms? What role does he play overall in the comedy?
