Blog Response #10 - Baywatch
I agree that Baywatch incorporates all the theories. The movie is so funny because the actors are very talented at delivering their lines. They portray the stereotypical lifeguard very well by how they run in the slow motion. It is incredibly stupid, but still makes me laugh because hopefully lifeguards would not run in the slow motion since there are people to save. Even in the video when she is trying to save him from choking it’s in slow motion. This is superiority and incongruity theory because we are laughing not really because he is choking, but how the camera focus on her and not even the guy choking. This is incongruent since we would expect for him to be saved fast, but it was slowed down which is ironic because if you do not do it fast enough the person may die. The funniest parts to me throughout the movie are the tension between Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The nicknames Johnson calls Efron are funny because each one are probably what people think of when they see Zac Efron. Johnson first calls him “fresh face” then goes on to tell him that he cannot just be on the team because of who he is. I think Johnson brings up a good point of how to be on the team that Efron must earn it. Nowadays people think they should get what they want and really should not have to work for it. Johnson then gives him his second nickname, “One Direction”. He pulls another lifeguard over and she joins in and they both make fun of Efron on how he is from Iowa and there are no oceans there so he probably would not have any experience. Efron tells them how he won two gold medals and so he thinks he’s a big deal. It is funny how the two lifeguards for a second are like wow of course then quickly say they could care less. Johnson gives him the next nickname, “NSYNC”. Efron is not phased by the nicknames since he is too cocky to process anything bad about him. He calls Johnson a sasquatch and slaps his face and walks away. The two lifeguards find this comical on how confident he is when he really shouldn’t be. This movie brings up an important point that a person should not be entitled to something based on their past. Each person should earn something because they are qualified and not just by who they are.

I think that The Rock always plays the same type of stereotypical role regardless of what movie he is in. I agree with you on your point about how things should be earned based of of qualification rather than a sense of entitlement.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the stereotype of the lifeguards is what adds to the humor of the movie. I also like your argument about being rewarded based on qualification rather than automatically getting it handed to you or just deserving it for no reason.
ReplyDeletethe term "corn fed" comes to mind. did they use it in the movie? It seems like the movie fits in with the self-aware genre such as movies like Deadpool.
