Blog response #5 - Hurricane Florence

Whenever there is a hurricane the memes that are created are so funny. During Hurricane Michael there were many funny memes created. My favorites were the ones with Michael Scott in the middle of the hurricane yelling or the one with Michael Jackson dancing in the center. I’m sure a new Twitter account was made and many of the same jokes were reused. It’s also kind of sad that these type of accounts are created because many people can be seriously affected by the hurricane. It is crazy to believe that accounts are created just for one hurricane that may not even last long. The tweets Madelyn described were very funny. I don’t have a Twitter so I miss out on funny new social media jokes. On Instagram I only see memes of the hurricane which I still find just as funny. People who are in the path of the hurricane (like we were) but weren’t affected I feel like could find more funny then those who actually got hit. It was also a joke that so many schools cancelled when the weather ended up being fine in certain areas. I agree that it is an example of incongruity theory because the tweets are just ridiculous, but still funny. The fact that past hurricane accounts were commenting like they were all friends is so funny to me. I think this is an example of relief theory because it is taking a serious event and making it comedic. People are literally laughing at which state it will hit. Like that’s awful because hopefully no one will, but yet everyone is still laughing and voting. I am very surprised that people who were affected are making jokes because serious damage could be done. Laughing helps people get distracted for a short period of time and it’s nice to be able to laugh at something because it can make it feel not as bad as it actually is.

  1. I loved the memes with Michael Scott photoshopped on to Hurricane Michael too. My favorite was the one with the storm projection where the numbers that indicated which stage the hurricane would be in replaced by the characters that Michael creates throughout the show. The most severe was, of course, Prison Mike.

  2. Perhaps what they are doing is more mocking the coverage, the way it has turned into a reality show in a sense, rather than mocking the actual tragedy itself? Perhaps we don't really ever mock tragedy in this case so much as make light of all the things around it, thus creating a comic storm around the somber eye, if I can use that metaphor.
