I completely agree that office quotes are everywhere. There is a person on my hall who wears a Dunder Mifflin shirt. I also see the mug Michael Scott has everywhere that says World's Best Boss. When looking for a gif to use, most every feeling can be expressed by someone's face or action from the office. I honestly feel like people who haven’t seen the office will still find Michael Scott yelling “NOOO NOOO NOOO” funny. I found the examples Sonali used about Kevin were very relatable. When my friends and I watched the Office, we tried to be like Kevin as a joke and speak in simpler yet more confusing phrases. It was a very amusing activity which always made everyone laugh. I think the most famous quote that came from the show is Michael saying, “that’s what she said”. People who haven’t even seen the show have caught on to the joke and are probably saying it without knowing the origin of it. Another popular quote I also hear is when Dwight says, “Bears. Beats. Battlestar Galactica”. Dwight can say the randomest things, but somehow they end up relating to our everyday lives. I strongly agree that The Office is a good example of incongruity theory. I disagree with Sonali’s point being that the show still did well after Michael left. When Michael Scott left I didn’t find the show to be nearly as funny. I didn’t particularly like the new characters that were brought in. I found the relationship between Dwight and Michael funny and when he left one of the funniest parts of the show left for me. I agree that Dwight is the perfect example of how incongruity theory can be shown. Even when he says the most inappropriate things I still laugh so hard. I also think Michael is a good example of incongruity theory. He says very blunt and random things about other coworkers. By the end of the show I feel like the characters are used to his inappropriate remarks and just ignore him because they know he is speaking nonsense.
I definitely thing that the big debate regarding the office is whether the show still had its same magic after Scott left. It does seem there's two schools of thought on all this. What do you think divides this group of people?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the show was not as strong after Michael left. It was still a good show but it was not as great as it once was. I also like how you brought up searching for gifs to use. Searching for The Office is always one of my go-to's when looking for the perfect gif to send in a message.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the show got worse when Michael left, but I think it was more of a slow decline rather than an immediate drop off. I think that the frequent usage of gifs of the Office shows exactly why the show is so popular. Even without seeing any of the show or knowing any of the characters it is still hilarious. I assume a large portion of people who have seen the Office found it because one of their friends were watching it and they thought it was funny enough to start watching too.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely one of those people who say quotes from The Office without knowing it, until about 3 seconds ago I never knew where "that's what she said" came from.
